Since its inception, the founders of the San Miguel Writers Conference have been devoted to putting on an event in both English and Spanish. We feel that bringing great authors such as Sandra Cisneros, Barbara Kingsolver, and Margret Atwood to San Miguel to speak should be an event that can be shared by the whole community.
The need for literary presentations in Spanish was dramatically revealed in a 2005 UNESCO report outlining the low numbers of readers in Mexico. According to the report, most Mexicans read just over two books per year. For this reason the conference is committed to including Mexicans in its literary offerings, and encouraging them to discover the pleasures of reading. The San Miguel Writers’ Conference is run by a nonprofit umbrella organization, The San Miguel Literary Sala.  The Literary Sala not only brings writers and other figures of interest to San Miguel, but also partners with various programs and external organizations.  Funds for these programs come from Literary Sala annual membership fees, outside donations, and monies received from fundraising events.
